This release didn’t bring a lot of new features, but under the hood lots of stuff changed.

The Event Bridge is a companion plugin to the ActivityPub plugin. It bridges ActivityPub and the Event plugins, in the truest sense of the word. The main reason this release is tagged 2.0.0 is the background we adopted many new features of the ActivityPub plugin, which has matured a lot since our 1.0.0 release, thanks to the great work of @pfefferle@mastodon.social and co. Follow @activitypub.blog@activitypub.blog to stay up to date.

For a long time, ActivityPub has been doing major work beneath the surface: improving how remote ActivityPub objects are handled, cached, refreshed and validated, and how their lifecycle is managed. The next step, in true WordPress fashion, is making this system pluggable. I originally wanted to hold off on 2.0.0 until that was done, but the refactoring and preparation on our side already improved many things along the way. The current state is well tested, and it fixed a number of smaller issues, for example ones caused by breaking changes in companion plugins that we had to adapt to.

The Event Bridge introduced its Event Sources feature, maybe far too early, and we are now moving it over to the new APIs of the ActivityPub plugin. This release already hands the logic for following remote actors and the caching of remote media over to the ActivityPub plugin. How remote events themselves are handled is something we hope to improve alongside upcoming ActivityPub releases, with 3.0 as our target milestone.

For the next minor releases, the goal is to improve outgoing events, as FEP-8a8e (the proposal for how events are represented in ActivityPub) is expected to get a hopefully final update soon.
